Rep. Good Locked in Tight Race With Trump-Backed Challenger.

The race may head to a recount.
Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) (C) speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill following a vote on April 19, 2024 in Washington, DC.In Lynchburg, Virginia, Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) finds himself in a tightly contested race against Virginia state Sen. John McGuire, who has received backing from former President Trump.
As of June 18, the outcome remains undecided, with the possibility of the race heading to a recount under Virginia law if the margin between candidates remains within 1 percent.
Rep. Good, known for his leadership in the conservative House Freedom Caucus, faces the prospect of becoming the first House incumbent this year to lose to a primary challenger, excluding cases where redistricting forced incumbents into competition.
In a late-night statement, Rep. Good rallied his supporters, acknowledging the substantial opposition faced, including over $10 million in attack ads. He expressed gratitude for narrowing the race to such a competitive margin.
The primary contest has revolved largely around loyalty to former President Trump. Initially endorsing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the presidential race, Rep. Good later switched support to Trump after DeSantis withdrew from the race. This shift has been a focal point in criticism from both Trump and Sen. McGuire, who emphasize loyalty to the former president.
Voters interviewed outside polling places on June 18 shared varied reasons for their choices. Some cited Trump’s endorsement as pivotal in supporting Sen. McGuire, while others highlighted McGuire’s background as a Navy SEAL. Those backing Rep. Good pointed to his conservative values and legislative record as reasons for their vote.
With the race hanging in the balance, the outcome will shape the political landscape in Virginia and beyond, reflecting ongoing debates within the Republican Party over its direction and leadership.
